as a general answer to all your questions, i downshift almost every time i slow my Z, because i still have the factory brake system, which needs all the help it can get when slowing down the tonnage of the Z. To answer your 1st question specifically, if i were doing 45mph in 5gear, i would probably be boggin the engine and would skip fourth and go directly to 3rd gear for a downshift. Keep in mind i always rev-match the engine rpms for a smooth transition (under more intense conditions, i use the heel-toe technique). For city driving, i dont typically downshift all the way to to 2nd gear unless im making a turn. Doubleclutching? Only time i double clutch is when my tranny is cold. Other than that, i leave the doubleclutching for the fast and the furious. AS for the track scenario, i brake first, to bring the RPMs down to a level where i wont blow my engine, then i heel-toe downshift into the turn, then accelerate out of the turn. BTW, how old are you?
